Cunlaghfadda Green Energy Ltd will be submitting a planning application for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility within the townland of Cloonbaul, Co. Mayo. The proposed BESS project will facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the grid, helping to support low-cost electricity and the enhanced reliability of the electricity grid.
What is a battery energy storage system?
A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a facility that stores electricity in large-scale batteries for use when it is needed most. When there is an abundance of renewable electricity available on the grid, such as during periods of strong wind or sunshine, the batteries can be charged. The stored electricity can then be released back to the grid during periods of high demand or when renewable generation is lower.
In simple terms, a BESS acts like a rechargeable battery for the electricity network, helping to balance supply and demand and improving the reliability of the grid.
The proposed BESS will provide a number of important benefits, including:
- Supporting the integration of renewable energy such as wind and solar onto Ireland’s electricity grid.
- Improving the reliability and resilience of the electricity network by providing power when it is needed most.
- Reducing reliance on fossil fuel generation during periods of peak electricity demand.
- Helping to improve energy security by storing electricity for future use.
- Supporting Ireland’s climate action and renewable energy targets by enabling greater use of clean energy.
The planning application will include detailed technical and environmental assessments and will be considered by Mayo County Council as part of the statutory planning process.
Once the application has been validated, all planning documentation will be available for public viewing in accordance with planning regulations. You will have the opportunity to review the application and make submissions to the planning authority should they wish to do so. This will be available on Mayo County Council’s website.
We remain committed to engaging openly with the local community throughout the planning process. If you have any questions about the proposed Battery Energy Storage System or the wider Cunlaghfadda Green Energy project, please do not hesitate to contact our Community Li Team.
